RE: IWC 3527 Deep One - experience with this watch? by Mark Minor (Registered User) Date: 03/30/2002, 15:48:34 In response to: RE: IWC 3527 Deep One - experience with this watch? -- fgoldy |
I can attest to the quality of IWC watches, I have two that I purchased new; a Mark XII pilot (owned 4 years) and a titanium Aquatimer (1 year). Both watches are comparable to any watch in their price range, and in my opinion, equal to more expensive pieces. I have owned new Omega, Bell & Ross, Fortis, and Rolex watches. The craftmanship and precision of the crown/winding mechanism on the Aquatimer is especially delightful. I disagree with "georgeo" and his comments. Only someone with an appreciation for "things mechanical" could truly appreciate the mechanical marvel the Deep One is. While I am sure his intentions are good, a quartz/battery watch is not in the same league as a good mechanical piece. While I rely on my depth gauge (mechanical) when I dive for depth indications and use my Aquatimer or Seamaster for timing requirements, the Deep One is a purpose built dive watch, and to merely use it as a "show piece" would be an injustice. While I know the great majority of Rolex sport watch owners never utilize the watch for the designed purpose i.e., Most Submariner owners do not dive, GMT owners are not pilots, Milgauss owners do not work near strong electrical fields, etc., I do feel the lack of specified use denies the owner/watchmaker the satisfaction they deserve. I also would like to comment on quartz/battery watches, as some people think that they are "bullet proof." Years back when I was in the military on deployment my quartz watch decided to die (battery) before I could get a new battery. Yes, I should probably have changed it (battery) before deployment, but the indicator ("skip" second hand) chose to "indicate" shortly after deployment. Batteries are also hit and miss and dependant upon an honest jeweler to install fresh batteries (and properly re-install the seals when they replace the battery). I have had "new" batteries last between 6 and 24 or so months.... so, If you can afford a Deep One, I feel it is a fine choice, and you can be sure that you will never/rarely see it on another wrist! |
